Double Gate Installation in Frederick, MD

Two-leaf swing gates for wide openings — driveway access, equipment clearance, and wide yard passages — engineered so both leaves hang level, latch together, and operate without racking or dragging.

01The Drop Rod Matters

Double swing gates need a drop rod on the inactive leaf — the leaf that stays closed — to anchor it to the ground before the active leaf can latch against it. A double gate without a proper drop rod flops open whenever the active leaf is opened under wind or uneven ground pressure.

02Both Posts Must Be Heavy

Each leaf of a double gate places hinge-side loads on its post. Both posts need to be sized and concreted for gate load — not just the post between the leaves. Undersized hinge posts on either leaf cause the gate to sag toward the weak post over time.

03Center Post or Gap?

Some double gates use a center post between the two leaves (which the drop rod anchors into). Others have a floating latch design where the two leaves meet in the middle with no center post. Each approach has tradeoffs for aesthetics, security, and ease of use.

Double Gate Installation: Engineering a Wide Opening

Double swing gates are the standard solution for openings wider than a single swing gate can span without excessive sag — typically anything over 14 feet. The two-leaf design halves the effective cantilever of each gate, which reduces hinge stress and sag. But the hardware and post engineering must account for both leaves acting independently and for the center latch point taking the impact of both leaves coming together.

Leaf Width and Swing Clearance

Each leaf of a double gate swings through an arc equal to its own width. A 10-foot-wide double gate has two 5-foot leaves, each swinging through a 5-foot arc behind its hinge post. The space behind each gate post must accommodate that arc without hitting a vehicle, building wall, or fence return. If swing clearance is the constraint, consider a sliding gate or a telescoping double gate that slides rather than swings.

Unequal leaf widths are sometimes used when the opening is wide and swing clearance is asymmetric — one side has more room than the other. We can specify a 60/40 split on leaves when site conditions warrant it.

Double Gate Hardware Components

  • Heavy-duty strap hinges (minimum 2 per leaf, 3 preferred)
  • Drop rod (inactive leaf) with ground socket
  • Center meeting latch or paired locking hardware
  • Cane bolt or slide bolt for additional security

Double Gate Post Standards

  • All gate posts (2 outer + center if used) at 36-inch minimum depth
  • All gate posts concrete-filled to grade
  • Outer posts sized for the full leaf weight on one side
  • Center post set for drop rod anchor if center-post design
What Happens Next

Our Double Gate Installation Process

1

Layout and Spec

Opening width measured. Leaf sizes calculated. Swing arcs plotted. Hardware specified for leaf weight and usage frequency. Post sizes determined.

2

Post Setting

All gate posts set at 36-inch minimum depth with full concrete fill. Posts plumbed and braced for 24-hour cure.

3

Gate Fabrication or Supply

Gates ordered or fabricated to confirmed leaf dimensions. Hardware sourced and matched to gate weight.

4

Hang, Level, and Hardware

Both leaves hung and leveled. Hinge adjustments made. Drop rod installed and socket set in ground. Center latch adjusted for correct engagement. Final swing test performed.

Automatic Operators for Double Gates

Each leaf of a double swing gate can be fitted with its own automatic operator. The operators are sequenced so the inactive leaf opens first and closes last — this prevents the two leaves from interfering with each other during operation. Dual-operator systems cost more than single-operator setups but are the correct solution for double gates on driveways with significant daily traffic.

HOA Approval for Double Gates

Double driveway gates are a significant architectural change and almost always require HOA approval in communities with architectural standards. Height, material, color, and even the presence of a gate can be restricted. We confirm HOA requirements before specifying material and help document the proposed gate for the submittal packet.

Drop Rod Maintenance

The drop rod on the inactive leaf must be pulled up before both leaves can swing open, and dropped into the ground socket before the active leaf can latch against it. Drop rod sockets in clay soil can heave slightly with frost, making the socket hard to engage. Annual inspection of the socket position and drop rod length keeps the mechanism working smoothly through Maryland's freeze-thaw cycles.

Wood Double Gates and Sag

Wood double gates are more prone to sag than aluminum because of the weight of wood boards on each leaf. Each leaf needs a correctly designed diagonal compression brace — running from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner — to resist the sagging moment. Heavier wood species (oak, full-dimension cedar) sag faster than lightweight species on long leaf spans. We specify frame size and diagonal brace based on the leaf width and wood species.

Questions About Double Gate Installation

What is a drop rod and why do double gates need one?

A drop rod is a metal rod attached to the bottom of the inactive leaf (the leaf that stays closed while you open the main leaf). When closed, the rod drops into a socket in the ground or a strike plate, holding the inactive leaf in place. Without a drop rod, the inactive leaf has nothing anchoring it when the active leaf latches against it — it will blow or push open whenever the active leaf is opened. Every double gate needs a properly functioning drop rod.

Can I automate an existing double gate?

Yes, if the existing gate posts and gate frames are in adequate condition. Automation adds weight to the posts through the operator mounting, and it requires the posts to be plumb and stable. If the existing gate is already sagging or the posts are loose, those problems need to be corrected before adding automatic operators — operators don't fix mechanical gate problems, they amplify them.

How wide can a double gate be?

Double swing gates can accommodate openings of 20-24 feet before the leaf width becomes so large that sag becomes a management challenge even with aluminum frames. For very wide openings — 24+ feet — sliding gates or bi-parting sliding gates are the more practical solution. We discuss configuration options when the opening exceeds what a swing gate handles well.
